After running an astonishingly close 2008 race in the 65th Assembly District, Carl Wood has declared his candidacy in next year’s election. Wood, a Cherry Valley resident with deep roots in the Inland Empire, is campaigning as an effective advocate for the working families and retirees who make up the overwhelming majority of the area’s population.
Even do-nothing incumbent Paul Cook “acknowledged that his 65th Assembly District is no longer safely in the GOP camp,” according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise. “In 2006, Cook won election with 60% of the vote. Last fall, his support dropped to 53% ...despite heavily outspending his opponent, Carl Wood.”
Said Wood, “Last year, we had to prove that this district was winnable for a Democrat, and we did that. The voters showed that they want effective representation in Sacramento. This time we’re going for the win.”
The 65th District, which includes parts of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, is one of the fastest growing regions of the state. Its residents face many challenges, including widespread unemployment, home foreclosures and transportation problems. Wood, a nationally-known energy expert who served as a California Public Utilities Commissioner, proposes to take an aggressive approach to addressing these challenges.
“It is incredible that working families face job losses and service cutbacks while the Republican minority in the legislature protects the oil monopolies from extraction taxes that are levied in every other oil-producing state, even Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana,” he said. “We need an Assemblyman who will put people before corporate profits.”
